One
Month Before Moving
- Fill out a change of address form available at the
local post office.
- Look for a reliable and affordable moving company.
- Take inventory of your belongings before they're
packed, in the event you need to file an insurance
claim later. If possible, take pictures or video tape
your belongings. Record serial numbers of electronic
equipment.
- Make arrangements for transporting special equipment.
- Take inventory of things you want to keep and things
you want to get rid of
- Start holding garage sales to get rid of any unwanted
fixtures
- Start packing things that are rarely used
One To Two Weeks Before Moving
- Inform the utility companies of a change of address.
(electric, disposal, water, newspaper, magazine subscription,
telephone and cable)
- Inform your bank, school or job of change of address
- Confirm reservations with the moving company
- Arrange for help on the moving day.
- Clean clothing and pack them for moving
- Arrange for special infant needs during the move.
- Reserve elevator if moving from an apartment.
- Collect valuables from safe-deposit box. Make copies
of any important documents before mailing or hand
carry them to your new address.
- Check with your insurance agent to ensure you'll
be covered through your homeowner's or renter's policy
during the move.
- Defrost freezer and refrigerator. Place deodorizer
inside to control odors.
- Give a close friend or relative your travel route
and schedule so you may be reached if needed.
On Moving Day
- Ensure everything is properly packed to avoid damages
during the move.
- Dont forget to check your mail for any last minute
mails
- Check lockers, closets and drawers to avaoid leaving
anything behind
- Incase of apartment rentals, return key to the management
office
- Make sure you have some emergency money
- Make sure all utilities are working at the new house
After Arriving At New Home
- Change your driver's license, auto registration
and tags to reflect your new address.
- Locate the hospitals, police stations, veterinarian
and fire stations near your home.
- Read and understand your lease/will.
